Ana Fernández-Tresguerres graduated in law from the University of Oviedo (Spain) and was awarded the Special Prize. She obtained a doctorate in civil and commercial law from the Complutense University in Madrid, and was awarded a unanimouscum laude mark for the defence of her thesis ‘Mortis causa gift of the status of partner’. For several years she was guest professor of civil law at the University of Oviedo and the Complutense University in Madrid.
She is a practising notary for the City of Madrid, and property and commercial registrar on leave of absence.
She is a counsel, advisor in private law, at Spain’s Ministry of Justice, a post which she obtained following a merit–based competition. Her duties include being a representative on the Committee on Civil Law Matters of the Council of the European Union, virtually since its inception. In this role, she has taken part to some degree in the Community adoption and national implementation of Community instruments in the field of civil law.
She is Spain’s representative on the standing General Questions configuration of the Committee on Civil Law Matters and also currently on the Successions and Contract Law configurations. She also assists on various Council working parties on financial services, securities and company law.
She is editorial advisor on various publications and magazines, and habitual columnist in the Spanish economic press. She has written many pieces of work on all aspects of private law, including civil, company, commercial, notarial, registration, private international and Community law. To cite some of her recent work: Código Notarial profesional(professional notarial code) (various editions); international private family law; usufruct, pledging and seizure of shares; studies on the family business; structural changes to commercial companies; comments on Regulations (EC) Nos 44/2001 and 805/2004; special successions under the future Union regulation on succession. She is currently preparing a case study on this regulation, as well as other works.
